As an author, you’re not only competing with other books and storytellers, you’re competing with other forms of entertainment, like movies and television. Why should a reader finish your book when there is endless entertainment available to them? Writing a book that readers finish isn’t as easy as people make it out to be.

As a book coach and developmental editor, the biggest mistake I see in manuscripts is a weak character arc. A weak character arc means that readers won't stay invested in your story. As fiction writers, our primary goal is to get readers to the end of our story. That means you need to do whatever you can to get character development right! Your success as a writer depends on it.

If you’ve ever looked into how to be a successful author or how to get published, you’ve most likely come across the common writing advice that says ‘persistence pays off’. But I want to offer a slightly different perspective. Persistence is important, but it isn’t the key to building a successful writing career, especially now that the book and publishing markets are completely oversaturated.

I try to speak about the query process and my own experience trying to get a literary agent as honestly as possible. My goal has always been to be transparent and show just how difficult the industry can be, even when you’ve done all you can to create a great story. Too often, we only see people posting about the wins and the good stuff and it makes us feel like we’re doing something wrong. On that note, I want to be completely honest about where I am right now with my querying.

I don’t think there’s a single writer out there who hasn’t felt that they don’t have time to write. More things are demanding our time and attention now than ever. You’re done NaNoWriMo, now what? National Novel Writing Month is over and regardless of whether you “won” or not, you’re probably relieved! The good news is, it doesn’t matter if you win or lose NaNoWriMo. What matters is what you do next with your draft (no matter how many words you got down).

An author’s job is to please and delight readers. This is the joyful, beautiful, wonderful gift of being a writer. Writing success is directly linked to how well we can engage readers. Show, don’t tell is one of the most common pieces of writing feedback you’ll receive as a fiction writer. But besides feeling cliched and overused, is show, don’t tell good writing advice?

If you spend a lot of time in writing communities, you may be feeling pressure to participate yourself. When I finished writing my first novel, I typed out ‘The End’, patted myself on the back and gleefully sent it out to readers for feedback. It had taken me many years to work up the dedication and willpower to sit down and finish a novel. I was so proud of myself. I thought the hard work was over and I just knew my readers were going to love it. I waited patiently for their feedback, anticipating all the praise that was about to come my way. But instead, what I got back was loads of red lines, including comments about how boring my story was and how unlikeable my main character was.

At some point, every writer deals with feelings of discouragement and burnout. You may even get to a point where you say I don’t want to write anymore. If you’ve lost your writing mojo, don’t panic! I’m going to give you some ideas on how to make writing fun again. Whatever you do, try to rediscover the joy in writing. Because, guess what? Writing is supposed to be fun! It should fill up and replenish your soul. If you feel depleted and drained, you may be doing it wrong. If you’re wondering how to get excited about writing again, here are four things you can try.

Feedback is a necessary part of writing a book. Since your story and characters live in your head, you’re not always going to explain things in ways that someone without the same information can understand. That’s why you need to find a feedback partner who can tell you honestly what’s missing from your story. However, too often feedback can leave us with a mountain of self-doubt, wondering how much of it we should really take into consideration.

Asking questions like, should I keep writing my novel? or should I shelve my manuscript? is something almost every writer faces during their writing journey. You may not feel excited and inspired every time you write, but a few mindset changes can help you overcome procrastination and long bouts of writer’s block.
