My writing journey

Although I always wanted to write books, I didn’t start until I was in my early 30s. Life, career and family were keeping me busy and I was writing non-fiction articles at my day job. I thought that would fulfill my desire to write, but the drive to write creative fiction was always just below the surface. So, in 2012, I sat down and wrote my first novel.

I believed I would be good at it naturally because I’d been successful writing blogs and articles, I was an avid reader and I was always told by others that I was a good writer. But without training and direction, or learning anything about the mechanics of storytelling, my novel didn’t hold the attention of my readers. In short - it was boring. And it wasn’t until I started getting feedback from others and learning more about the craft of storytelling that I realized just how far I’d missed the mark.

From that point on, I made it my mission to learn all I could about what makes a great story. I committed myself to schooling, workshops, courses and training; and worked under talented professors and mentors to learn from experts in the craft of creative writing.

I now hold a Post Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing from Humber College and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. I’ve dedicated the past ten years to studying writing craft and have now written several short stories and another two novels. I’ve also joined writer’s groups and communities and have spent time beta-reading and editing for other writers. Now I’m ready to share all that I’ve learned with you.
